Playgrounds in Knocknacarra

There are two main playgrounds in the Knocknacarra area, both of which are well-maintained and popular with local families. The playgrounds are located in Cappagh Park and McGrath's Field. Both are free to use and are open to the public during daylight hours. In addition, some housing estates (Leargan, SlĂ Burca) have their own, smaller playgrounds. There are further playing fields and a skatepark in Westside Park on the Seamus Quirke Road. You might also consider viewing our page on local schools.

McGrath's Field Playground

McGrath's Field

Shangort Road

The playground at McGrath's Field across from the Seacrest Kafe is a particularly popular playground in Knocknacarra.

Owned and operated by Galway City Council, the playground includes slides, twirling seats, and a very impressive zipline. The Council invested in a substantial refurbishment of the tennis courts in 2022, installing metallic basketball hoops.

Playing fields next to the playgroundIn addition to the playground itself, there are two tennis courts as mentioned above. There is also a large green area immediatley north of the playground. This pitch is regularly utilized by locals for GAA, rugby, soccer, and related sports. It is also a suitable and popular spot for dog walkers and joggers.

Unfortunately, parking is limited. For those looking for public transport options, the 402 and 411 bus stop right outside it.

Cappagh Playground

Knocknacarra Community Centre

Cappagh Park

The community playground is the largest playground in Knocknacarra and often under-utilized. Located at the rear of the Knocknacarra Community Centre and just off the Cappagh Road, the area is a very safe location to let the kids run wild and get their energy out.

The playground includes plenty of seating for parents and minders. If you want a cup of coffee while you wait, you might consider stopping in the Cappagh Stores across the road before your arrival.

Also operated by the Council, the playground includes a zipline, swings, and a small climbing wall. The large "twirly slide" is guaranteed to be a hit.

The Twirly Slide As the playground is located on the grounds of the Community Centre, there is easy access to indoor sports (basketball, badminton, etc.) and the floodlit astro-turf pitch. There are also very good pedestrian paths into and around the nearby Barna Woods. This gives you the added option of a more "natural" calming experience after the climbing and the sliding.

There is ample parking at this playground with the exception of peak times such as Saturday mornings.
